The elephant is symbol of Thai nation that has long been a central element in Thai culture and way of life, prominently featured in legend, literature, art and architecture. They have also been noted for their intelligence, memory and pleasant nature. Revered by ancient kings, at one point in the kingdoms history, the White Elephant, symbolic of the king, was featured on the flag. A Thai legend has it that a marriage is like an elephant-- the husband is the front legs, that choose the direction, the wife the back legs, providing the power! Sadly with dwindling forest areas and the loss of the elephants natural habitat, there are only 5,000 elephants left in Thailand and it is listed as one of Thailands endangered wildlife species. Thai Elephant Day was instituted in an effort to raise greater appreciation of this national treasure, past and present.
