Influenced by Chinese puppets from Chinese artisans living in Bangkok, the first creation of Thai puppets was completed in 1878 and performed to the Thai public in scenes of Thai literature since then. The mechanism of puppet making is sophisticate with 16 attached strings. Each puppet is carved from softwood and is hollow allowing the strings to pass down the middle. Strings from specific areas of the wooden support are connected to various parts of the body and these are manipulated to make the head or any of the jointed body parts move. Puppeteers hold the support in one hand and manipulate the strings with the other by slipping the rings at the end of the strings over their fingers.
