Untitled Document

The inspiration of Two Thai Dancers was from The Ramayana, the Indian masterpiece epic. It was about the romantic battles between the human Phra Ram (an incarnation of Phra Narai, the Vishnu Indian God) and Tosakanth, the 10-faced and 20-armed demon king of Longka City for the beautiful young Princess Sida. The Ramayana comprises the whole of the epic literature of the ancient Hindus with the most graphic and life like pictures that exist of the civilization and culture, political and social life, religion and philosophy of ancient India. ?To know the Indian epics is to understand the Indian people better?. For it must be remembered that this is not dead literature of long ago; it has influenced and molded Indian life for thousands of years and is still a living factor today in the innermost depths of Indian consciousness.

In Thailand the Ramayana, also called Ramakien, is expressed in diverse forms, such as literature or the performing or visual arts. The story must have become popular in Thailand at least as early as the Sukhothai Period (about 700 years ago). Up to the present day, in northern, northeastern and southern regions of Thailand there exist folk versions that are still well received among the local people.

This beautiful ?Two Thai Dancers? design portrays Phra Ram and Sida. Actor and actress appear in elaborate costumes glittering with gemstones. The graceful movement of a hand on the heart means love.
